Consulting Firms as Investors… and Universities, Too?|投資会社としてのコンサル会社…

This trend is likely to become even more pronounced going forward. I believe consulting firms—which used to offer advice from the outside as if it were someone else’s problem—will rapidly fade away.

“From the Boston Consulting Group to Accenture, consulting firms are currently shifting many of their projects to a performance-based compensation model.”

This is especially true in the strategic consulting sector, where they themselves are making massive investments in AI. While it’s still unclear exactly how much strategic value these investments will yield, they themselves understand that AI has become a massive force that could eventually displace them. Of course, their clients don’t understand this either. So, they have no choice but to adopt a “sink or swim together” approach.

In fact, an unavoidable reality already exists: “AI is putting pressure on the consulting industry. If projects that once required large teams and months of work can now be completed in a short period by smaller teams utilizing AI, clients will come to expect lower prices, which could lead to a decline in the firm’s profits.”

In short, this means that consulting firms are increasingly taking on characteristics similar to those of investors, whose fortunes are tied to stock prices of the clients.

Just as general trading companies have undergone this transformation over the past 15 years. They have shifted from playing a supporting role behind the scenes for client companies to adopting an investor mentality—taking on risks and accumulating profits by directly purchasing shares in client companies and restructuring the industry.

In fact, I predict that forward-thinking universities will gradually adopt this trend as well. Especially given that tuition fees in the United States are skyrocketing, half might be paid in cash, while the other half could be paid on a “pay-as-you-succeed” basis—that is, a success-based fee structure where payment is made only upon achieving success.

If a student already shows entrepreneurial potential, the university could purchase unlisted shares from that student as part of the tuition fee and nurture them as an innovator and leader. By both students and universities taking risks together, university professors who teach nonsense that’s out of touch with the real world and act all high and mighty will gradually be weeded out. Of course, we’ll still need to provide ample support for fields like the humanities, which can’t be measured solely by economic criteria.

In any case, society is going to change at an astonishing pace—driven by the power of AI.
